I guess I’m no Top Model…

The other day, I produced a Bridal Fashion shoot for a talented Vancouver photographer, who also happens to be a great friend of mine. While our models were having their hair & makeup done, Vasia thought it would be a great opportunity to (finally) get some new profile photos of me taken for my website. We also thought it would calm our model’s nerves to see me work the camera first.

So… apparently I’m not quite Top Model material. LOL. I was so nervous and awkward…let’s face it, I’m a “behind the scenes” kind of girl. I don’t know how to handle the spotlight. When I was told to smile, I resembled a certain FRIENDS character. When they made me laugh in order to get a natural looking candid, my eyes disappeared and my mouth opened into a widely hysterical cackle.

After a torturous 20 minutes of having my photo taken, I think we came out with 2 or 3 actually usable images. LOL. Wow. Next time can I just get a model to stand in for ME?

Where did the year GO?

Seriously, it’s December already?  Wow, sorry for the bug chunk of missing posts.

So, update.  We’ve moved to Vancouver, into a downtown condo.  I love the location of our new place, it’s really convenient, and I love the amenities (such as the 24 hour concierge).  However, I do NOT love the lack of storage around here.

It’s pretty ridiculous.  Half of our furniture is sitting at Allan’s parent’s house, along with boxes of stuff that we couldn’t fit into the condo.  It’s an adjustment all right.

Well, here we are at the end of the year again and I have no idea how it went by so quickly.  Happy Holidays to all of you from our family.   Click here for our  Chan Clan Xmas 2010 Newsletter.  =)

The BIG MOVE – part 2 (Living “In Between”)

NOT. FUN.

So our house is empty we’re officially mainlanders now.  Moving from a house into a condo, that was fun! lol.

The BIG MOVE – part 1

the night before selling over 1/2 of our furniture.

So the rumours are true, we are moving back to Vancouver.   Husband made the decision on Wednesday July 7th, and we needed to be Vancouver-based as of August 1st…giving me a little over 3 WEEKS to coordinate the move of a family of 4.

THREE WEEKS!

To get my house rented, find a 2bd + 2ba + den condo in Vancouver to live in (site unseen), clean/purge the house, hold a MOVING SALE, hire movers, get Kiana out of Preschool…you get the picture. Thankfully I managed to get all that done; amazing, I know. Now the move is looming nearer and nearer, and since most of the chores are done, the emotions are starting to sink in. Watch out for the waterworks people. Stay tuned.

Kaya Papaya will have a Fiesta

Kaya turns 1 in a month…which means I have only 1 month to plan.  Sometimes I think it would be so much easier if I weren’t an event planner & I could throw my kids just a simple party in my backyard.  Who am I kidding, even when I TRY to do simple backyard parties, they get out of hand and complicated really fast.

Example A: Kiana’s “Undersea Party” last year.

Invitations, Cake, Favors, Candy

Decor, Kids craft station, Whale pool

Sushi, Punch, Fish Sandwiches

I just can’t seem to throw a party without THROWING A  PARTY!  So here’s the theme for Kaya’s first b’day:

I dream of more space…

This is my house.  Cute, isn’t it?  My husband & I bought this place just before we got married, thinking it would be a great “starter home” for the two of us, for the first few years of married life pre-children.  Well, as it happened, we had children way sooner than expected (pregnant 1 month after the wedding).  Since then, I’ve also started my own event planning company which operates out of our home, as well as added another little bundle of joy to our household.

Now our cute little 2 bedroom/2 bathroom bungalow is feeling (not so slightly) cramped.  Why didn’t anyone tell me that kids take up so much room for such little people?!?  It’s ridiculous.  We have toys in the guest room/playroom, toys in the living room, toys in the den which I’ve converted into their bedroom, toys in the dining room, toys out on the deck…  AND we have my craft supplies and office equipment, and wedding/even props and books crammed into whatever space is left.  Needless to say, this house is not clutter free.

The natural idea would be to sell this house and buy a bigger house.  The problem is that I LOVE the location of my house now.  We’re great friends with the neighbours across the street who have kids the same ages as ours, we’re walking distance to the elementary school & preschool my children attend, THE BEST coffee shop in town is literally around the corner, we’re the house on top of the hill & we have killer views of the sunset and mountains.  Point – I don’t want to move.  Solution?  Remodel.

So here’s what I’m thinking:

1: Build a front porch, paint the front door, and change the siding to get the West Coast Arts & Crafts style I love.

2: Extend the back of the house by about 16 feet and build an upper storey.  This will give us space for a bigger kitchen, dining room, family room, living room, and guest room on the lower floor, and 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, a laundry room, and a Master Bedroom with spa-like en-suite bathroom and walk-in closets on the upper floor.

3: Build a wrap-around deck in the backyard for some outdoor living space and a BBQ area for hubby.

The catch:  We don’t know where to begin!  We’re so not DIY people when it comes to home improvement, it takes us months to get shelves hung and we have furniture we intended to stain that are still sitting naked in our living room.   It’s like my last post…great intentions…but meaningless.

So I guess the next step would be to find an architect to make up plans, get approval from the city to build said plans, and then find a contractor who can get it done in a timely manner & on a budget?  That’s a tall order, isn’t it?  Is this a hoop dream or do you think it’s do-able?  Where do I go from here, and do you know of any good architects or contractors in Victoria?  Thoughts/Comments/Snide Remarks?

Good intentions…mean nothing.

So, a month ago husband and I decided to take a vacay. I know, exciting, right? And it was – is. Picking out the destination was fun, and deciding on which dreamy 5 star resort to stay at was even better.

We decided on the Mayan Riviera in Mexico, so in less than 10 days I will be lounging at the fabulous Sensatori Azul.

Beach beds @ Sensatori

Can’t you just see me lying here basking in the glorious sunshine? Jealous? Well don’t be. I can picture me doing exactly that, and believe me, it’s not pretty. I have lots of excuses: I’ve had 2 kids, one pretty recently. I have no time to work out. Blah blah. I was also full of good intentions, determined to be beach ready by the departure date. Instead, I gained 7lbs. I blame the carrot cake from Market on Yates. It’s deliciously evil.

Let’s face it, the truth is simple. I love food. My husband loves to make good food. I have no willpower. And I’m l-a-z-y. You will never catch me on a diet that deprives me of yummies…especially cake. You will not likely see me in a gym or yoga studio. You will hear me complain if I have to walk more than 3 blocks.

So, how do I solve my beach body dilemma? I’ve accepted that I will not be tanning in bikinis & have gone shopping for cute one pieces, and flattering maxi dresses. I’ve booked a mani & pedi so that at least my fingers & toes will be cute. I’ve also booked a wax so I can feel good, you know, on the inside. Lol. All in all, I’ve made peace & am learning to “love the skin I’m in” and have accepted that my metabolism is not what it was 5 years ago.

I haven’t given up though. I want to be sexy for the big 3-0 this June…so I may have to give this exercise thing a try. I am totally motivationally challenged when it comes to getting my butt outta bed to exercise, so any help (wake up calls/texts/nasty comments on this blog) will actually help me get in gear.

Wish me luck & perserverance? Oi.

OMG. I can see!!!

I just got my new corrective lenses today, and holy cow, what a difference! Seriously, I can see! I mean, I could see before, but now I can really see. I see texture, detail, definition, clarity! The world is in crisp HD and it’s beautiful!!! Man, I’ve been missing out and I had no idea.

I know I sound like a crazy person, so I’m going to try to help you understand my excitement. The photo below is a comparison of how I see with glasses, vs how I see sans glasses.

See, I could see...just not quite so well.

Nuts hey? My kids are cuter, my husband’s better looking, and I’m…wow, I’m aging! Hahahha! Guess some things were better in soft focus.

I’m now driving with a huge grin on my face cuz I can read all the street names and license plates of cars in front of me. I don’t have to squint to read subtiltles on tv. Seriously. This is amazing.

If you even so much as suspect you may need glasses, go get your eyes checked. I’ve been seeing the world in analog for so long due to sheer vanity. Now I’m totally excited to wear my glasses cuz the whole world’s in HD (and it helps that I bought stylish D&G frames). You will not regret the glasses…and like a wise friend told me: “it’s just another accessory to shop for.” (She knows me so well.)

Bonus: I needed prescription sunglasses too. Like my new Ralph Lauren shades? Heehee. 🙂

I will always ♥ Vancouver.

Winter Olympics. Vancouver 2010. The best place on Earth.

It’s like Mardi Gras, only not in New Orleans.  During times like this, I really miss living in Vancouver and am really glad that I’m not too far away.  Don’t get me wrong, I love living in Victoria…but there’s just something about Vancity, from sea to sky.
